Stranger at the Party... Robert Graves...
For annoyance, not shame,
   Under their covert stares
She would not give her name
   Nor demand theirs.
Soon everyone at the party,
   Who knew everyone,
Eyed her with plain envy
   For knowing none-
Such neighborly mistrust
   Breathed across the floor,
Such familiar disgust
   With what they were and wore-
Until, as she was leaving,
   Her time out-stayed,
They tried to say they loved her;
   But pride forebade.
